Venture Out

Venture Out

Venture Out Cardiff officially started in October 2006 and is funded mainly by a grant from The Big Lottery Fund, as part of The Mentro Allan scheme. The project will develop new opportunities for outdoor exercise for disabled people in Cardiff. Specialised equipment has been purchased to allow disabled people to take part in water sports such as sailing canoeing, kayaking and rowing.

The initial project plan was developed following consultation with over 200 disabled people from Cardiff. A specially designed questionnaire determined which types of activity were most popular among the target group.

Venture Out Cardiff aims to improve the health of disabled people by encouraging them to enjoy more exercise. Utilising green spaces in the local area means that people will experience improved mental health, through spending time in the natural environment. As well as increasing opportunities and improving physical access for disabled people, a range of different promotional methods are being used to reach people who currently do little or no exercise.

These include nominating individuals from disability groups to be peer group champions, the creation of new social groups and a DVD about the activities available. This year has seen many participants enjoying horse riding, walking, hiking, cycling, gardening and conservation activities.
